- Teacher discouraged Edison
He was the youngest of seven siblings. Teachers in school considered him as dull and very confused. Often he was sent back from the school by his teachers as his mind stroll away from studies. But his mother stood by him. She was confident of her son and was angry when the teachers call Thomas a dull boy who cannot study. She took Tomas away from school. She taught him at home. Later in his life, Thomas Edison had always credited his mother for all his success in the life.
- 10-year-old Edison built his first lab
From his young age, Edison was always curious about the things around him. At the age of 9, he started making simple experiments at home. He used to spend all his pocket money on buying chemicals. He was careful about his priceless chemicals and kept them in bottles labeled as ‘poison’. At the age of 10, Edison built his laboratory in the basement of his house.

Edison had a hearing problem. Some people said it was because he was slapped hard by the conductor but some other suggested it was a genetic disease. His father too was deaf.

- Edison was fired from his first job
As a 14-year-old, Edison started working as a telegraph operator for the Western Union. He changed his day duty to the night duty, so he could do more experiments. But by chance, while carrying some experiment using sulphuric acid on the battery, a fire broke damaging the office. And thus Edison was fired from his first job.
- Edison’s first failure was his first patent
22-year-old Edison had got his first patent for Electrographic Vote-Recorder machine. Every legislator had to move the switch in order to record the vote on the presented bills. But it was not successfully used by the members. Their votes were not recorded as the members keep changing their votes. The Chairman of the governing body had rejected the machine. And the patent was canceled.

Two years after his first wife Mary died. Edison accidentally met good looking young Mina Miller. It was like love at first sight for both of them. They spent time together. According to the registers of the Mutual Life Insurance Company, Edison had tattoo formed of five dots on his left arm. The tattoo was mysterious as nobody knew about it. Edison invented the first unofficial tattoo machine which worked with stencil-pen. Stencil pen was patented by Edison in the year1876. Edison’s tattoo machine was modified by Samuel O’Reilly who was credited with inventing first tattoo machine.
- The invention that stunned Edison himself
Edison made used of x-rays to invent modern fluoroscope which was used in hospitals. In those days X-rays were not considered unsafe. Edison directed his employee Clarence Dally to develop a fluoroscope. Clarence tested X-ray tubes on his hands and it developed an infection on his hands. And it became worst when Dally not just lost his hands but his life after a long suffering. Edison was shocked at Dally’s death and was so much stunned. He decided to call off his research on x-rays.
- The Concrete House: Edison’s strange Invention
Edison decided to get into the cement business. He wanted to solve New York City’s housing problem. He thought of building a house just pouring cement into a single mold. Even he decided to make different shapes such as windows, staircases, bathtubs by using concrete molds. But practically it was not possible and Edison has to withdraw his idea of building houses, though he built one concrete house for himself. He had even built a concrete piano and concrete furniture which were failed to catch the attention of the people or the market.
- Elephant Electrocution
Edison was supplying power to the United States with around hundred power stations. Edison believed in supplying DC current against the idea of supplying AC current. Once an elephant of a circus became wild and went out of control killing few people. It was a threat and the circus owner wanted to execute it. Edison was against capital punishment but he took this opportunity. He wanted to demonstrate how DC current system is safer and better than unsafe AC current system. He used 6,000-volts AC current and the elephant was electrocuted within few seconds. Edison recorded the live incident of the elephant execution on his tape recording device completely.
